Meet the Cherry Blossom Girls!

Tuesday, March 25th, 2014

After spending 22 years in Norman, Okla., it was time for Rainey Sewell, 23, to venture out. Sewell received a Communications degree from the University of Oklahoma, and upon her collegiate graduation planted herself in D.C. at the end of May 2013 to work for Rep. Frank D. Lucas.

"I loved all of my trips to D.C. while in college, so I figured it was a good place for a fresh start," Sewell said. Since being in D.C., Sewell has become a lover of going to brunch with friends, sight-seeing, and walking/running around the monuments on the Mall. However, she also has an everlasting love for all things Oklahoma.

"I love Oklahoma with my whole heart," Sewell said. "It will always be home."

It just makes sense, then, that Sewell combines her love for Oklahoma with her love for Washington, D.C. This year, Sewell will represent Oklahoma as the Oklahoma State Society Cherry Blossom Princess.

The Cherry Blossom Princess Program is a weeklong opportunity for young women from across the U.S. to come together and network. Since 1948, state and territorial societies have selected accomplished young women between the ages of 19 and 24 for their academic achievement, exceptional poise and appearance, excellent interpersonal communication skills, leadership, interest in social, civic, community and world affairs with a strong desire to serve others through community service, maturity and responsibility, and to represent their State Society.

Sewell joins a team of strong OKSS Princesses. Last year, the Cherry Blossom Queen title was captured by Oklahoma's own Mary Anne Morgan.

"This whole experience is exciting because I get to follow Sarah and Mary Anne's footsteps, and they're two of my best friends on the Hill," Sewell said. "They represent Oklahoma exceptionally well." And, there is no doubt that Sewell will represent Oklahoma well, too.

For your chance to meet the immediate past two and current OKSS Cherry Blossom princesses, attend the Membership Drive Happy Hour on March 25th at Union Pub on Capitol Hill from 5:30 - 8:30 pm. For more details regarding the Membership Drive Happy Hour, see information above.

The Turnpike Troubadours Meet and Greet

Wednesday, November 6th, 2013

The OKSS hosted a meet & greet with fellow Oklahoman and country music artist Jason Boland and his band, The Stragglers, on October 8th at Hill Country BBQ. If you missed the recap with a Q&A with Jason Boland, you can find that HERE.

We had a great turn out and such a great time with Jason that we thought we would reach out to another Oklahoma country band, The Turnpike Troubadours, to see if they would be interested in hosting a similar event prior to their upcoming show.

Well, The Turnpike Troubadours have graciously agreed to host a private meet & greet / cocktail hour with the OKSS before their show at The Birchmere in Alexandria on November 6th. Any OKSS member or friend is welcome to attend the meet & greet if they purchase a ticket to the concert and RSVP to okssmail@okstatesociety.org with the subject line "Turnpike Troubadours." You can purchase tickets to their concert HERE. Tickets will sell out so buy yours soon! Hope to see you there!

More about the band:

A gritty, country-leaning roots rock band out of Oklahoma, the Turnpike Troubadours at their best synthesize the populist, political folk of Woody Guthrie and the outlaw-styled honky tonk of Waylon Jennings with doses of bluegrass, Cajun and straight-out rock dynamics. Fronted by singer and guitarist Evan Felker and including bassist R.C. Edwards, fiddler Kyle Nix, guitarist Ryan Engelman and drummer Giovanni Carnuccio, the group celebrates and explores modern rural life with a full awareness of history, delicately avoiding being ornate revivalists. A debut album, the self-released Bossier City, appeared in 2007.

Gifts of Sight Dinner with Dr. Bruce Shields

Monday, October 28, 2013

You're invited to join fellow Oklahoman, and Oklahoma Hall of Fame nominee, Dr. Bruce Shields, on October 28th at a dinner at the National Press Club benefiting The Glaucoma Foundation.

Dr. Shields will explore the topic "Lessons from Patients to Guide All Our Lives" in a 15-20 minute presentation built upon the theme of his acclaimed book Gifts of Sight. It is an empathetic, insightful, and evocative book exploring the intimate nature of the doctor/patient relationship.

In today's high-pressure environment of all-too-often impersonal and routinely institutionalized health care, this highly respected ophthalmologist and physician will offer beneficial insights gained from an exemplary 50-year career into how doctors - and, more broadly, all people - can develop more sensitive, understanding, considerate, substantive, supportive and truly successful personal relationships. A question-and-answer period for dialogue will follow Dr. Shields' presentation.

More information about his distinguished medical career is available here and here.
